Sophia Felbaum, 2025. Undergraduate Thesis in the Department of Biological Sciences, Saint Vincent College. During stages of decomposition, a variety of organisms take part in the decomposition process, especially microorganisms. In particular, dfungal communities differ with each stage, with some being dominant during the bloating stage as compared to the active decay stage. The hypotheses I will be testing in my project are (1) soil pH impacts the growth of fungus, (2) different types of fungi will characterize the different decomposition stages, and (3) decomposition of rat cadavers that are outside will be faster than the ones that would be inside. The cadavers that are outside will likely have more obvious succession patterns as well as more diversity as opposed to the ones inside. This will likely be due to the environment of which they will be decomposing in, allowing for other factors to influence the fungal growth that a controlled environment would lack in. During this project, I will try to identify the dominant fungal communities that are present in succession during the stages of decomposition by collecting samples and plating them. Research such as this aids in the understanding of forensic mycology, animal decomposition, and the process of fungal succession. Published by the Ornithology Program at Saint Vincent College.
