The Mosin Minute - Episode 121: Comparing the Mosin Nagant M91/30 Sniper Rifle with the K98 Mauser

Now...the ultimate test. Which rifle is better? The Mosin Nagant M91/30, with a PU 3.5X scope? Or an old German K98 Mauser, using iron sights? In this highly unscientific episode, we try to finally sight in M91/30 reproduction sniper rifle, still shooting at 50 yards. I just about had this puppy down called by the time we were done, but unfortunately, the repetitive shooting was taking a toll on my shoulder, and I know my accuracy was going down the tubes after about an hour of shooting it. So, we finally busted out my precious K98 Mauser. This is a Russian capture K98, so metal is over-blued, the parts are completely mismatched, and the barrel is dark with what looks like pitting further down towards the chamber-end of the barrel (or that could be copper build up, but I doubt it, given the fact that it's 72 years old). The ammo was Remington case reloads, using175 gr. Sierra bullets and (I think) about 48 grs. of H414 Hodgdon powder. And as you can see, the performances speak for themselves. This K98, with iron sights, STILL shoots a hell of a lot better than that scoped Mosin Nagant! Granted, the 8mm ammo is reload ammo, so one would expect that ammo to perform better than this crappy 7.62x54R Brown Bear ammo, which is the heaviest bullet you'll find on the market for these guns...probably too heavy, these rounds have way more punch than your standard surplus Russian or Bulgarian ammo. But still...I would rather have the K98 if I were in a pinch. However, I might reconsider that if I were in the middle of Stalingrad in early Jan. 1943...because there's one thing you can say about the Mosin Nagant...those Russians never had to worry about their rifles seizing up in the cold weather, which the K98 was prone to experiencing if it wasn't properly lubricated. Anyway, we had a great time shooting these guns. Keep an eye out for more vids.
