The Wand is a cartridge-dedicated, pen-style machine from Bishop Rotary that is hugely popular with tattoo artists and available in three versions: Liner, Packer, and Shader, with our focus today being on the Packer model. So let’s take a closer look… The Bishop Wand Packer is an all-in-one tattoo machine that is ideal for colour realism and both modern and traditional colour packing, as well as bold lining. As you can see here, the Wand comes complete with an aluminium grip, a black and grey premium RCA cord, and a Bishop-branded zippered hard case for travelling. Unlike the Shader version which has a brushed motor, the Wand Packer, along with the Liner model, comes fitted with a 5-Watt brushless Faulhauber motor with custom winding made specifically to provide more power and torque during tattooing. The Packer sits in the middle of the Bishop Wand range thanks to its fixed 4.2 millimetre stroke length. As with the other models, this tattoo pen is compatible with universal, Cheyenne-type needle cartridges and offers adjustable needle depth up to 6 millimetres. You can use the included Bishop RCA cable or one of your own to power the Wand via the RCA connection we can see here. If you want to cut out the need for cords and power supplies, check out the Bishop B-Charged battery pack, which will integrate perfectly with your Wand and provide up to 12 hours of wireless power. The Wand Packer has a recommended working voltage range of 7 to 9 Volts, with Bishop recommending 5 to 6 Volts for peppery shading with a 3 Round Liner and around 6 Volts for whip shading. This pen-style rotary does not offer adjustable give, but if you lower the voltage you’re working at, it will naturally lower the give of the machine. Bishop Rotary’s lightweight Wand Packer is crafted from aircraft-grade aluminium and comes with a smooth matte black finish for the machine and grip, along with a hand-polished copper band. The included grip is not only fully-autoclavable, but has been ergonomically-designed to ensure that it’s comfortable to hold and use over long tattooing sessions. The Bishop Wand Packer measures 30 millimetres in diameter and 95 millimetres in length with the grip attached, while weighing in at 113 grams. For maintenance purposes, use the silicone grease pack that comes with the Wand and apply a teardrop-sized amount every 6 to 8 weeks - roughly every 150 hours of use. However, you only really need to lubricate the machine if it starts to become noisy. Before applying the grease, make sure to turn the machine on and then use a cotton bud to precisely add a drop of the lube onto the drive bar of the Wand. After the third or fourth time lubricating the rotary, you should clean inside of the chamber to ensure the silicone grease doesn’t reach the motor. This can be done by unscrewing both the grip and back plate, then using a cotton bud to remove any excess grease.
