What does it take to restore a 19th-century sandstone building with the same care and craftsmanship as its original construction? In this episode of Artisans of Australia, master stonemason George Proudman leads the restoration of weathered stonework at Sydney Technical College, built in 1891. Using traditional tools and techniques, George demonstrates how greystone from Wondabyne Quarry is selected, shaped, and fitted to match the original fabric of the building. With quiet authority and deep respect for the craft, he explains the geometry behind stonework, the centuries-old methods of cutting and dressing stone, and the philosophy of sympathetic restoration—where every replacement must honour the skill of the original mason. The film concludes with a reflection on the enduring nature of stone buildings and the pride that comes from leaving a lasting mark on the built environment. For George and his fellow masons, stonecraft is more than a trade—it’s a legacy. Artisans of Australia is a six-part series that documents rare and specialised restoration skills across Australia. Each episode features intimate narration from the artisans themselves, offering insight into both their techniques and the traditions they preserve.
