UK: LONDON: THOUSANDS TAKE PART IN PRO CANNABIS MARCH

(28 Mar 1998) Italian/Eng/Nat Campaigners fighting for the legalisation of cannabis gathered in force on the streets of London on Saturday. Thousands of protestors took part in what is thought to be the biggest pro-cannabis demonstration for 30 years. However, the British government is adamant there will be no change to its drugs laws. About ten thousand people took to the streets of London to call for the legalisation of the controversial drug cannabis. The numbers were swelled by campaigners from all over Europe joining the demonstration. Starting in Hyde Park, the march culminated in a rally in Trafalgar Square where demonstrators flaunted their use of cannabis in front of police and even goaded them by smoking the traditional marijuana 'joint'. Former cannabis smuggler, Howard Marks, encouraged demonstrators to challenge the policing of cannabis by forcing police to charge or release smokers instead of cautioning them when they are arrested. SOUNDBITE: (English) "This government callously allows youth to be alienated, poisoned, imprisoned and ruined. This government suspiciously allows gangsters to distribute natural herbs at exorbitant profits. Stripping the young of their hard earned money." SUPER CAPTION: Howard Marks, former cannabis smuggler People shared in the ritual of burning lumps of hashish under a huge "legalise it" banner. Police said they made few arrests or cautions even though people were flaunting their use of the drug. The event was organised by the editor of the Independent on Sunday newspaper, Rosie Boycott. She said she was pleased with the numbers of people who had turned out and urged the government to consider a change in the law. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We want our children to respect the law. But if they go out and smoke a joint and find that it's OK, then their experience tells them one thing and the law is telling them another and that is not a way to bring them up." SUPER CAPTION: Rosie Boycott, Editor, Independent on Sunday Thousands of marchers from Italy, Netherlands and France shouted for the legalisation of the cannabis saying that drug barons are the only ones who seem to benefit from the existence of the drug. Marchers also wanted the government to recognise that cannabis helps ease the pain of people suffering from diseases like multiple sclerosis and arthritis. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Because I'm fed up of living in a nanny-state that tells us what we can and can't do, on reasons which sound very unfounded. And also for the rights of multiple sclerosis victims to alleviate their suffering by using drugs." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop The protest may be loud and strong but so far it has fallen on deaf ears. The British government says it has no plans to change it laws on marijuana.
