To mark Nelson Mandela International Day, ITN presents the extended, raw footage of the moment on 11 February 1990 when Nelson Mandela was released from Cape Town's Victor Verster Prison. Capturing the event from a number of different angles, this footage gives an opportunity for an extended look at a defining moment in world history. Having been imprisoned 27 years previously for organising and leading the resistance to South Africa's apartheid regime, Mandela was released to a global fanfare in a move that represented a significant step towards the end of apartheid in South Africa. Walking alongside wife Winnie Mandela, Nelson - affectionately known as Madiba – left the prison to deafening cheers. He had not expected a crowd to greet him; Mandela told biographer Rick Stengel that he expected to be greeted by 30-or-so prison warders who he had arranged to thank.
