Red Noise which is also called Brown Noise, is made from all the frequencies that the human ear can perceive in the same way that white noise is. However, within red noise the energy is not equally distributed amongst them. Like pink noise, there is a rolloff of higher frequencies which allows the lower frequencies to be more prominent in the overall sound heard. However, with red noise there is more of a reduction in the high frequency content than found in pink noise so the lower frequencies become even more pronounced creating a deeper sound compared to white or pink noise. Therefore red noise is perceived as less harsh than white noise and more mellow than pink noise. When you think of red noise picture powerful waterfalls, heavy rainfall, roaring rivers, or soft rumbling thunder. Red noise is well suited for study sessions when a focused mind is needed for long periods of time but doesn’t quite mask as much distracting high frequency sounds in our listening environment as either white or pink noise. Although, if listening with headphones this may be the preferred soft noise to use as it is the most gentle of them. Some people perceive red noise as more of a bass-like drone than a hiss. Although it is the least popular of the three soft noises often used for sleep aid (white, pink, brown/red), red noise is gaining popularity especially within the sleep health industries. Many “white noise sleep machines” or mobile sleep apps are now using red noise instead of pink noise to give it a deeper more ambient effect. Studies have shown that pink or brown/red noise are more ideal than white noise when being used as a sleep aid and can lead to maintaining a deeper sleep for longer periods of time. We recommend pink or brown/red noise for sleeping but encourage you to try them all and see which one works best for you.
