I remember the first time I watched Hamilton a few years ago - I didn’t quite understand the show(like why Lafayette suddenly became an enemy mid way). But the lyrics of one song made a particular impression on me. Fast forward to a few months ago: by chance, I decided to revisit Hamilton. This time, I recognised the song the moment the piano intro came in, and till this day could not get rid of it in my head. Wait for it, a song that captures Burr’s internal conflict so powerfully it makes him relatable, to feel his burning ambition against his constraints, to understand him as a person rather than a name. Life doesn’t discriminate between the sinner and the saint, but history does. Everyone may strive to be Hamilton, always climbing uphill and seizing every opportunity.
