Notre-Dame Basilica is located in the historic district of Old Montreal, facing Place d'Armes square. The interior design is considered one of the most dramatic in the world and is regarded as a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture. The sanctuary’s vault is painted deep blue and adorned with golden stars, while the rest of the interior is richly decorated with shades of blue, azure, red, purple, silver, and gold. Stained-glass windows line the sides of the church, but unlike those of most churches, they illustrate the religious history of Montreal rather than traditional biblical scenes. A majestic pipe organ with about 7,000 pipes also stands in the sanctuary. The construction of the basilica main structure started in 1824 and lasted until 1829. However, the remaining elements took much longer and the interior was the last completion which happened in 1888. The organ was completed even three years later. The basilica is also home to a stunning lightshow : the AURA Experience, combining video projections, colorful lighting and orchestral music.
