Sell your car for free with Auto Express: https://bit.ly/AEX-Sell-My-Car Ready to rival other electric superminis like the MINI Cooper E, Vauxhall Corsa-E and Peugeot e-208, Renault’s confident that its funky little number isn’t just more stylish than its rivals, but cheaper too. That design is based very clearly on the original Renault 5 from the 1980s, but even if you’re too young to remember the original, the modern 5 is still striking and dramatically styled in its own right. It comes with a range of bright colours and optional sticker packages, plus all feature standard 18-inch wheels and a funky set of LED lights, so even if you want to keep to the lower-specification models it’ll look just as funky as the green number we’re testing here. The car’s interior has a few references to the original with elements like the padded dashboard, but this is built overtop of a much more contemporary design with impressive digital displays and slick detailing. All models have two 10-inch screens as standard, and both run an Android-based user interface that embeds apps like Google Maps and Spotify right into the system. Renault will offer two battery and motor options in the UK with a 118bhp motor and 40kWh battery kicking things off with around 190 miles of range, but for those wanting a little more performance, a 148bhp option with a larger 52kWh battery will push this out to nearly 250 miles. Yet the most attractive thing about the R5 might just be its £22,995 starting price, as it significantly undercuts all of its key rivals, and in the case of the MINI is around £7,000 less expensive. Even if you spec-up the models to the more comparative 52kWh battery, the Renault is still significantly cheaper, finally bringing funky electric motoring to the masses! Do we love the R5? You bet we do! And we think you will too…
