January 21, 2024 - 10am. Join us for a profound sermon titled "I am in The Number," inspired by the transformative teachings in Mark 2:13-17 from both the NRSV and MSG translations. In this sermon, we dive deep into what it means to be a disciple in today's world, aligning our lives with the teachings of Jesus. Our guide, @mikewalrond, delves into the essence of being a Red Letter Christian, emphasizing the importance of shaping our lives by the words of Jesus, the Carpenter. He reminds us that the scriptures which should galvanize our lives are those spoken and taught by Jesus himself, urging us to follow His way. In a world where love often becomes a target for those who prefer to hate, conquer, and oppress, @MikeWalrond highlights the courage it takes to adhere to the love ethic of Jesus. This allegiance, he notes, may make us targets, but it's a crucial part of our spiritual journey. We explore the radical nature of Jesus' teachings, with @MikeWalrond pointing out that Jesus introduced concepts that were largely new, with 85% having no cross-reference in Hebrew Scriptures. This was the 'something new' - the kingdom of God - that Jesus proclaimed. @MikeWalrond also touches on the revolutionary idea that Jesus fostered: the belief that one could have a personal relationship with God, trusting in the divine revelations received individually. Our sermon also addresses the dangers of being consumed by the crowd, highlighting the presence of both supporters and detractors in our spiritual journey. "Life be lifeing," as @MikeWalrond puts it, teaches us that sometimes life's events are just part of our existence, not necessarily a curse. Join us in this journey of faith, understanding, and transformation, as we seek to be part of the number that aligns with the teachings of Jesus. In this sermon you will find the answers to several spiritual questions that are central to understanding the teachings of Jesus. These questions include: What does it mean to be a disciple in the modern world? This question is addressed through the concept of living a life aligned with the teachings of Jesus, as emphasized by @mikewalrond. How should the teachings of Jesus shape our lives? The sermon discusses the importance of focusing on the red-letter words of Jesus (his direct quotes in the Bible) and letting them guide our actions and beliefs. What are the challenges of living according to the love ethic of Jesus? The sermon touches on the idea that embracing Jesus' teachings of love can make one a target for those who prefer hate, conquest, and oppression. How did Jesus' teachings differ from traditional Hebrew Scriptures? @MikeWalrond mentions that a significant portion of Jesus' teachings were new or had no direct reference in the Hebrew Scriptures, particularly the concept of the kingdom of God. Can individuals have a personal relationship with God, and how? The sermon explores the idea promoted by Jesus that individuals can have their own relationship with God, trusting in their personal experiences and revelations. How should we react to the diverse opinions and attitudes in a spiritual community? The sermon warns against being consumed by the crowd, acknowledging the presence of both supporters and detractors in one's spiritual journey. Why do bad things happen, and is it always a sign of being cursed? Addressing the saying "Life be lifeing," the sermon suggests that not all adverse events are a curse but can be part of the natural flow of life. What is the significance of change in the journey of faith? The reference to Alphaeus and its interpretation as 'change', brings up the theme of transformation in the spiritual journey. What does it mean to truly follow Jesus? The story of Levi, who left material wealth to follow Jesus, is used to illustrate the depth of commitment and re-prioritization required to follow Jesus genuinely. How does God view us in our struggles and imperfections? The sermon concludes with a powerful reminder that God sees us in our need and struggle, reminding us of our worth and that we are His children, regardless of our circumstances. _________________________________________________ Stay up-to-date on new FCBC Sermons and FCBCNYC content by subscribing here https://bit.ly/39weuoO To support this ministry and help the Harlem community and those around the world, click here https://bit.ly/3lyVfhb FCBC is led by Pastor Michael A.
