Live performance at Kongsberg Music Theater, 23.04.2022. Kjempeviseslåtten is Harald Sæverud's most famous composition written in 1943. The work is available in two versions, one for solo piano and one for symphony orchestra. The title itself refers both to the resistance struggle and to the folk ballads' so-called giant songs. The striking and captivating main theme can be said to create associations with some Norwegian ballad melodies. It is repeated in constantly new lighting throughout the composition and with increasing intensity. On the title of the play, Sæverud wrote: "To the big and small fighters of the home front!" and a little below it says "Ballad of revolt" (rebellion ballad). Sæverud got the inspiration for the work during a trip in Lærdal. He himself has said: "It was on the pier in Lærdalsøren, on the way home from a rare visit to Oslo, that a furious protest struck me at the sight of the enemy's barracks that marred the mountainside up the valley. Spontaneously like a bitter oath, the tones burst out of me. " In Lærdal, a stone slab has been set up by the pier where Sæverud stood, where some of the notes in Kjempeviseslåtten are engraved. The giant song has remained as a musical symbol of Norwegian patriotism.
