CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is a life-saving emergency procedure used when someone’s heart stops beating (cardiac arrest) or when they stop breathing. Full Form: C – Cardio → heart P – Pulmonary → lungs R – Resuscitation → revive or bring back to life Purpose: CPR helps keep oxygen-rich blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until medical help arrives. Steps of CPR (Basic Adult CPR – simplified version): 1. Check for response and breathing Tap the person and shout: “Are you okay?” If no response and not breathing (or only gasping), call for help. 2. Call emergency services (like 108 in India) If others are around, ask someone to call for help and bring an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) if available. 3. Chest Compressions (Hands-Only CPR if untrained) Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest. Place the other hand on top, interlocking your fingers. Push hard and fast — at least 2 inches deep, 100–120 compressions per minute (like the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” song). 4. Rescue Breaths (if trained) After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths: Tilt the head back, lift the chin. Pinch the nose, make a seal over the mouth, and blow for 1 second. Watch for chest rise. Continue cycles of 30 compressions + 2 breaths. 5. Continue until: The person starts breathing Medical help arrives, You are too tired to continue. For children and infants, CPR steps are slightly different (less forceful compressions, different ratios). If you’re not trained — Hands-Only CPR (chest compressions only) can still save a life. AEDs can analyze the heart rhythm and deliver a shock to restart the heart — follow the voice instructions on the device. Early CPR + Early Defibrillation = Best chance of survival.
