Henry Cisneros, the former San Antonio mayor and HUD Secretary for the Clinton administration, talks about how he found out he had prostate cancer and how he chose to deal with it. Henry's urologist, Dr. Juan Reyna at Urology San Antonio, discovered the cancer during a routine prostate exam. Henry's PSA blood test was within the normal range, but a hard spot discovered during the rectal exam was suspicious so Dr. Reyna suggested a biopsy to confirm or rule out cancer. To both men's surprise, the biopsy proved Henry had cancer. Henry reviewed all of his options. He could have chosen active surveillance (regular monitoring of his prostate with treatment only if the cancer began to spread), surgery to remove the prostate, radiation seeds implanted in the prostate to kill the cance, or external radiation therapy delivered for a few seconds each day at a radiation therapy center. A man of action, Henry chose a treatment over active surveillance. He opted to have IMRT or intensity modulated radiation therapy, a highly precise form of external beam therapy.
