Knowledge and power are deeply enmeshed, which hardly comes as a surprise. But it has taken philosophy a long time to understand the ethical consequences of this insight. Miranda Fricker's book "Epistemic Injustice. Power & the Ethics of Knowing" made a splash in 2007. The influential philosopher, professor at New York University, shows that we must have a linguistic repertoire to be able to denounce certain abuses in the first place. When "stalking" did not exist as a term, victims were unable to convey what was threatening them. Credibility depends not least on who is speaking: A marginalized person in dirty clothes would find it difficult to be believed if they told us that they had been robbed. Stereotypes and prejudices thus contribute to grievances that we only recognize when we think carefully about language, knowledge, and power. But words are also powerful when it comes to redressing grievances. A thank you or an apology at the right time can change everything.
