Swedish Medical Center Englewood, Colorado This project involved the development of a new main entry and lobby for the hospital, new and renovated patient floors, and renovation to expand and upgrade the NICU with private patient rooms. New construction of a patient tower on the sixth and seventh floors, over existing mechanical and surgical spaces, was designed to house forty private inpatient beds. This new addition was structured to expand vertically two more floors in the future. Connections were made back to the existing nursing units at each floor. This project also renovated four floors of the hospital's existing high rise ten-story patient tower. Design challenges included completely "gutting" and building back the twenty-bed nursing units in place, while keeping the units operational. The project also involved bringing the existing patient tower into compliance with high rise codes, and updating the existing fire command center. Renovation of the existing NICU to improve and expand it required careful planning to maintain the unit's sensitive operations without disruption. The age of the existing tower and the condition of the existing mechanical and electrical systems made this portion of the renovation extremely challenging and required thoughtful consideration of systems and phasing by all team members during design and construction. 65,500 SF New / 128,000 SF Renovation Construction Completion Final Phase March 2011
