Dr. Kerry Assil: PRK laser eye surgery is the alternative to LASIK. I like to use a more advanced version referred to as epi-LASIK that does the same thing as PRK, but heals a little bit faster without the use of any chemicals. And what we do here is instead of creating a split in the cornea with the laser, we instead remove the dead skin layer on the outer surface of the cornea and then use a laser right on the outer surface to reshape the cornea. And if we want to treat nearsightedness, we will flatten the cornea. If we want to treat farsightedness, we steepen for people who have warpage astigmatism, we even out the cornea. And for people who wish to get rid of reading glasses, we create a specifically dome shape to the cornea that assists with that also. Once we've removed the dead skin layer and the laser has reshaped everything. Then we put a contact lens, a very ultra thin contact lens over the cornea that serves as a band aid for about a week. The lens stays in there. They don't take it out, and then we will remove it after about a week. And they, the vision improves tremendously just as effectively as LASIK, although a little bit slower than LASIK.
