Climbing Aconcagua in Argentina via the Normal Route with AMG (Aconcagua Mountain Guides). I could not be more pleased with the support provided by AMG. Their staff and guides were top notch and they were prepared for every possible scenario. I could not have reached the summit w/o their expertise and support. Our itinerary was modified several times due to weather (Snow and wind). At one point the park was closed due to rock slide potential at lower altitudes and avalanche danger at high altitudes. The summit received 3 feet of snow and no expeditions were able to summit for 5 straight days as a result. There was an unusual number of people attempting to summit on my summit day as it was the first day in 5 days that conditions were favorable. My group with AMG started with 8 climbers but only 2 reached the summit. We lost one at base camp (Plaza de Mulas) due to injury (aggravated muscle). We lost another at Camp 1 due to exhaustion. Then we lost 4 more at Camp 2. One decided to turn around due to the cold and another turned around with her due to illness (stomach). The other two were evacuated via helicopter due to HAPE. On summit day, one of our guides had to be evacuated via helicopter due to HAPE. It was crazy to witness so many people get evacuated due to HAPE. The sunset from Camp 2 was possibly the best sunset that I will ever see in my life. Reaching summit was pretty cool too. Our time from Camp 3 to the summit was 7 hours and 38 minutes. That was pretty good considering the constant log-jams of people that we encountered along the way. After itinerary adjustments due to weather, it ended up taking 12 days to reach the summit. I did not know how my body would be affected by the high altitude as I had never been higher than 14,400' prior to this expedition. Fortunately 12 days was enough time for me to get acclimated for the summit push and I was not impacted by the altitude. I highly recommend AMG to anyone that is looking to hire a guide company for Aconcagua.
