Running the Pyongyang marathon was cool already - in fact truly one of the world’s coolest marathons. But winning the Pyongyang marathon coming second in the half marathon!? And that after one of the most tumultuous nights of my life and about 3 hrs sleep… Journey to Pyongyang: 00:00 The Worst Happens (almost): 04:00 Pyongyang Marathon 2025: 05:15 PYM Opening Ceremony: 08:30 Running the Pyongyang Marathon: 10:40 Around the Marathon: 20:00 PYM Awards Ceremony: 27:49 Closing thoughts & North Korea Tourism: 31:36 I went on this trip as part of a special delegation of runners with Koryo Tours, the official partners of the Pyongyang International Marathon. There’s 200 amateur runners from around 50 countries taking part, as well as elite runners from across the globe and of course DPRKorean athletes. It’s actually my third time at the Pyongyang marathon but my first time of being what i guess you’d call an actual “runner”. Of course because we’re “running delegates” and not “tourists”, but also because last time I was here it was a time in my life where I was more into drinking and smoking than running. Since the first time i took part in the 10k in 2017, I’ve actually run over 20 full marathons, probably double that in halves, and also run a handful of ultras too. (Yup I’m one of those annoying people who loves running.) So I don’t know if you can see it but I’m super happy today that I get to combine two big passions of mine! Running and showing you around North Korea - and in Pyongyang of all places! Note on Strava - for my fellow runners wishing to see my activity on Strava. Strava actually bans you if you upload from certain sanctioned countries (I.e North Korea). I found out the hard way and spent weeks getting my Strava back. Anyway, it’s back if you want to follow me - but the Pyongyang Marathon isn’t there, unfortunately. ---------- PYONGYANG MARATHON ROUTE The Pyongyang Marathon begins and ends in Kim Il Sung Swuare with over 50,000 Koreans cheering you on. The name Pyongyang actually means “flat land” so this marathon is actually really flat and nice, with a total up and downhill at less than around 20 m. You first pass the Arch Of Triump straight as you come out of the stadium, followed by Kaeson Street and the Fruendship Tower. You’ll then pass Ryongnam Street, Kumrung Cave, Chongryu Bridge and get to Munsu Kangan Street at 5km where you’ll find the first aid station - located every 5km in. Next up you’ll go past Okryu Bridge (where we see the Okryugwang famous noodle restaurant) and Sunni Street and up to the Pyongyang Grand Theater. 10kms in and we’re at Mirae Future scientist street, one of the newer streets in Pyongyang. Things mellow out a bit from here as we pass the half marathon turnaround and then head to Pothonggang Bridge, Sodan Football Stadium, and the Taekwondo House, past the School Children’s Palace and down to Kalimgil Bridge where full marathon runners turn around to head straight back to Kim Il Sung Stadium down the same route. ---------- NORTH KOREA TOURISM North Korea has NOT YET started tourism. It is unknown when tourism to North Korea will start again; anyone that tells you something different is just guessing. We hope it’ll be soon, though! ---------- A NOTE ON QUARANTINE Just an FYI on the quarantine situation. I thought I’d add this in since it’s part of the story; honestly a lot of things had happened recently and going from the major high of being back in Pyongyang after so long and seeing people I’d missed dearly to then going to the super low of having that taken from me really destroyed me. Of course, I’m happy to follow quarantine rules if needs be - I was just sad about the situation. Hope that makes sense!
