Old man scoots to Fallon Cottage. It was built in the 1880's and is one of the oldest buildings in Everton Park. Back in the mid-1800s, the area wasn’t called Everton Park at all. It was generally known as Kedron, after the Kedron Brook that runs through the suburb, or sometimes as Bunyaville. It was a pretty rural area back then — mostly farming, timber cutting, and even grape growing. One of the big landowners around here was a bloke named Joseph Poultney. In December 1863, he bought Portion 65 in the Parish of Kedron for forty-three pounds and two shillings. That land sat on the corner of what was then called Bunya Road; now South Pine Road and Happy Valley Road, which we know today as Stafford Road. To the left was land owned by Colonel John McDowall, an early settler in Brisbane. The suburb of McDowall is named after him. This spot was considered pretty remote at the time, even though it fronted onto Bunya Road, which was the main route heading north to Gympie. Not long after arriving in Queensland, Joseph started working as a shingle splitter, producing timber shingles for roofing on early Brisbane homes. By the 1870s, he’d expanded into full-scale timber getting, cutting timber from his own land and from the nearby Bunya railway timber reserve to help supply the growing city. And he didn’t stop there. From 1873, he bought more blocks — Portion 596, 599 and Portion 597.He was buying up land big time. In the early 1880s, Joseph used land near where the Everton Park Shopping Centre stands today to build a sawmill — the Poultney Sawmill. At its peak, it employed around 200 people and supplied timber and roofing materials for many early Brisbane homes. Everton Park itself gets its name from the “Everton” homestead of pioneer Ambrose McDowall, who was a farmer and early residents in the area. They named it after Everton, a suburb of Liverpool in England. By the late 1890s, the area was commonly known as Everton Park, even though the name wasn’t officially gazetted until 1975. Back to Fallon Cottage. The cottage was built around 1889 on land fronting South Pine Road, on a subdivision granted to Charles Poultney — Joseph’s son. Charles was a farmer, timber-getter, and local politician, serving as a councillor before the creation of the Greater Brisbane Council in 1925. There’s also some evidence suggesting the cottage may have once been a Cobb & Co. stop. Joseph Poultney died in 1908 at the age of 75, after living in the area for about 45 years. In 1916, Joseph’s three sons sold the land the cottage sat on to Mary Jane Bennett. The larger Poultney home was destroyed by fire in 1988, leaving Fallon Cottage sitting alone on its block. Then in 1992, Brisbane City Council relocated the cottage from South Pine Road to here at Fallon Park, to stop it being demolished for unit development. It’s been a local heritage place since 2003, and in 2015 it received a formal heritage citation for its connection to the Poultney sawmills and the early development of the area. Today, it’s used as a community centre run by Brisbane City Council, and it’s one of the oldest surviving buildings in the district. So there you go — a bit of local history from Everton Park.
