EAST LINDSEY PARISH #2: GRAINSBY Grainsby is our location today, a small village which sits just off the A16 to the Southwest of last week’s village, Waithe. Grainsby and Waithe are inextricably linked together, owing to the fact that they were both owned by the same family. We’ll get to them, but first, the name. Despite being located in an area of arable farmland, Grainsby doesn’t derive its name from grain. Instead it comes from the old Scandinavian word for a branch of a river. That’s not surprising because the area is covered in small tributaries which all lead in varying capacities, to the River Humber. Made up of a few houses dotted around here and there, and a church in the middle of it all, you’d be forgiven for thinking Grainsby was just an idle backwater with not a lot of history. You would be very, very wrong. It was for the best part of the 19th century and beyond, all owned by the Haigh family – one of the wealthiest families in Yorkshire, who originally came from Halifax. They were so wealthy that they would even build their own railway station to serve their home – Grainsby Hall – which has now been demolished. There’s a lot of family history in this one too, which may be of interest to those of you in America. Grainsby remains an estate village, and most of its properties are built in the same uniform style. It includes the massive Grainsby Park which extends South into North Thoresby.
