By September 1995, the Bosnian War had been raging for almost three and a half years. The Siege of Sarajevo, one of the longest sieges in modern history, was still underway, with news of a civilian sniping campaign and the murder by Bosnian Serbs of some 8000 Muslim Bosniak men and boys at a UN-declared safe area in Srebrenica in July shocking the international community. At the helm of this was the head of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS), General Ratko Mladic, who had been indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in July 1995. Just two months after this indictment and in the midst of the war, Channel 4’s Alex Thomson and team secured this exclusive interview with Mladic – “the Butcher of Bosnia”, an experience he detailed further in a recent commemorative event co-hosted by the ITN Archive, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica Massacre last summer. After the war, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) would pursue Mladic for almost 16 years, until his arrest in May 2011. The ICTY found him guilty on several charges and responsible for the Siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica Massacre. Today he remains imprisoned in the Hague, aged 83. Below is a chaptered summary to navigate this fascinating interview with ease, completed entirely through a translator. #Bosnia #BosnianWar #Yugoslavia #Srebrenica #Massacre #WarCrimes #Genocide #CrimesAgainstHumanity #RepublikaSrpska #BosniaAndHerzegovina #Bosnian #bosniaherzegovina #BosnianGenocide #SrebrenicaMassacre #SrebrenicaGenocide #RepublikaSrpska #VRS #Massacre #Genocide #Yugoslavia #Serbia #Serbian #SerbianArmy #WarCrimes #CrimesAgainstHumanity #EthnicCleansing #slobodanmilosovic #ratkomladic #hague #sarajevo #siegeofsarajevo #unitednations #nato 00:50 - Alex Thomson meets Ratko Mladic / set up shots 02:00 - Question 1 - Were you surprised by the violence of the NATO response? 02:30 - Mladic response translated - part one 03:23 - Mladic response translated - part two 04:23 - Mladic response translated - part three 05:20 - Question 1 (repeated) - Were you surprised by the violence of the NATO response? 05:30 - Mladic response (repeated - and not translated) 07:32 - Question 2 - Given the force of NATO, will you now move all heavy weapons from around Sarajevo? 11:57 - Mladic response translated - part one 15:17 - Mladic response translated - part two 15:35 - Question 3 - In view of all that, do you expect that there will be further NATO air strikes? 15:55 - Mladic response translated - part one 16:29 - Mladic response translated - part two 16:34 - Question 4 - Beyond Sarajevo, was the loss of Crvena a catastrophe for Bosnian Serb Republic? 17:10 - Mladic response translated - part one 17:48 - Mladic response translated - part two 19:35 - Mladic response translated - part three 20:19 - Question 5 - Surely this means the dream of the Republika Srpska now finished? 20:40 - Question 5 - Surely this means the dream of the Republika Srpska now finished?
