In my opinion, Soundgarden was the most musical band of the grunge era. They had a way of making odd time signatures, strange chords, and overall dissonance feel completely natural and emotional. Ben's style of bass playing was very unconventional and was the perfect contribution. Strange note choices, playing ahead of the beat, playing chords where you wouldn't expect, etc. This a video highlighting the moments I feel he came through and shined the most.
