Splitting a Beehive Had a friend call this morning asking about how to do this. So I explained it all to her. Turns out I got a chance to go check my own bees and pull it off too! This hive was booming. The sort of split in the spring is quite easy, especially if the hive is already set up as a double deep. If the bees are occupying both deeps, with eggs, brood, and food in each, then you just simply find the queen, and pop the boxes in half, moving one to a new location. It is critical though that the box moved to the new location gets the food extra honey. They won't have any foragers bringing in fresh resources, so they need it all already in house. The original location will retain all the foragers, so food should not be an issue for them. I advise moving the queen to the new location. I've tried in the past moving queen cells, but found that if not moved far enough, the bees can fully abandon the new box, and even the queen cells, and all go back to the original location. But they won't abandon a queen. Splitting a beehive isn't supposed to be hard, but to do it the best possible way takes a little bit of thinking and effort. Give it a shot! www.brueggensbees.com facebook: brueggens bees youtube: brueggens bees or tom brueggen
