A man has died after a fire ripped through a flat in a town centre, police have confirmed. Emergency services rushed to the apartment in Leigh, Greater Manchester, at around 3.45am this morning (Monday) after reports that a flat was on fire. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have now confirmed that a man was found dead in the flat. Photos from the scene on Railway Road show forensics going into the shop below the property, which is called 'Cha Cha Gee Poundplus.' Other photographs show Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) firefighters on a ladder, looking into the window of the apartment. A GMP spokesperson said an investigation into the man's death has been launched by detectives but no arrests have been made yet. They said: "At around 4am today (Monday 24 February 2025) we were called to Railway Road in Leigh to assist Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue with a fire at a property. "After conducting initial enquiries, sadly a man was found deceased and subsequently an investigation has been launched by our detectives. "No arrests have been made at this stage, but enquiries are still in their early stages and ongoing with a scene remaining place that will impact the local area." A GMFRS spokesperson said: “At around 3.45am on Monday 24 February, four fire engines from Leigh, Atherton and Hindley fire stations, and a drone and aerial appliance from Stretford Community Fire Station, were called to attend a flat fire on Railway Road, Leigh. “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels, ladders and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire. “Crews remain in attendance.” Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident 287 of 24/02/2025 or details can be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
