Abstract: The Sora traditionally had their own animist belief system, including ancestor veneration and shamanic practices, but many later converted to Christianity of various denominations, as well as various branches of Hinduism. The traditional pantheon of Sora includes sonum and kıttung. No suggestion has ever been made about the etymology and relationship of the word kıttuŋ. The original phonetic form of kıttuŋ can be reconstructed as *kıntuŋ, where kın- is the prefix and tuŋ is the historical stem of the word. This stem coincides with the word atuŋ ‘gourd’. Sora mythology tells of the ancestor deity who survived the Deluge together with his sister on a giant gourd and revived all living things anew.
