This week, West Africa became the center of a high-stakes geopolitical scramble — and Burkina Faso is right at the heart of it. On February 12, 2026, Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister stood in Moscow and signed a historic, legally binding deal with Russia. This wasn’t a photo-op. It was the result of months of negotiation — a framework designed to lock in a long-term partnership between Burkina Faso, Russia, and by extension, the Alliance of Sahel States. Just one day earlier, the European Union had arrived in Ouagadougou, pitching what it called a “fresh start” and a new, equal partnership. But timing tells the real story. While Brussels arrived with conversations, Moscow arrived with a contract. The momentum has already shifted. As Russia consolidates its position in the Sahel, pressure is now moving south — into Nigeria. In Washington, a new U.S. bill accuses Chinese mining interests in northern Nigeria of fueling insecurity and terrorism. Beijing has issued a strong, point-by-point denial. Behind the diplomatic language is a deeper struggle over gold, uranium, rare earth minerals, and strategic control of the Sahel belt — stretching from Burkina Faso straight into northern Nigeria. With the West pushed out of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, Nigeria is fast becoming the next geopolitical battleground. Foreign powers are circling. Deals are being signed. Legal frameworks are being prepared. And once again, Africa’s future is being negotiated at the highest levels. The question is no longer whether the balance of power has shifted — it’s how far this shift will go, and what it means for Nigeria, the Sahel, and African sovereignty itself. 📌 What do you think? Did the EU arrive too late? Is Nigeria next in the great power struggle? Can Africa navigate this moment without losing control of its future? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
