The laparoscopic Vecchietti is a surgery that lengthens the vaginal canal for individuals born with underdevelopment of the vaginal canal (vaginal or mullerian agenesis, also known as MRKH). MRKH affects 1 in 5,000 females. As a result of changes during development before birth, individuals with MRKH have a shortened vaginal canal and underdeveloped uterus. The majority of individuals with MRKH can lengthen the vaginal canal through dilation. If unsuccessful, there are a number of surgical procedures available to lengthen the vaginal canal. The laparoscopic Vecchietti is one type of vaginal lengthening procedure (vaginoplasty) offered by Cincinnati Children’s to treat vaginal agenesis. The MRKH Care Center at Cincinnati Children’s is a specialized interdisciplinary team experienced in providing comprehensive care for individuals with MRKH. The team at Cincinnati Children’s is committed to changing the outcome for individuals with vaginal agenesis.
