8-19-2020 WEEKLY HANGOUT REPLAY: I am extremely proud and thankful to present a super rare treat in the world of meteoritics; an after hours virtual tour of Arizona State University - Center for Meteorite Studies (CMS) meteorite vault! Our tour guide is the curator of the collection and Research Professor, Dr Laurence Garvie. The goal of this collaboration is to bring the study of and the passion for meteorites to a new and growing audience. Please remember to LIKE this video! Thanks. Laurence starts by discussing the history of the CMS and the need for the new meteorite vault. The vault allows room for the collection to grow while being curated in a climate-controlled environment. There are some Carbonaceous meteorites that must be cared for differently, in Nitrogen rich chambers. It is important to preserve meteorites properly to be shared with other institutions and for research in the future with new tools and skills. CAI, Calcium Aluminum rich Inclusions, are discussed in detail because they are the oldest (date-able) material in the universe. By studying CAIs and the chemical makeup of Carbonaceous meteorites, we learn about the pre-solar universe. Arizona history is on full display with some of Harvey H. Nininger’s Canyon Diablo work still in his original mayonnaise and Ovaltine jars. (I kid you not!) We heard about more Arizona falls like Glendale, Chandler, Nothing, and the full story of Dishchii’bikoh-Ts’ilsoosé-Tsee (fell on Apache land 6-2-2016). LOTS of specimens are shown off and I can’t list them all. It is a quick paced 2hr video full of priceless cosmic artifacts. Allende, Tassédet 004, Aguas Zarcas, Sikhote-Alin, Bishopville, Agoudal, Chassigny, Nakhla, Shergotty, Black Beauty, Almahata Sitta, Deal (NJ), Mbale, Sutter's Mill, and a massive hunk of Ensisheim -the famous witnessed fall from 1492 plus lots of old labels!!! www.meteorites.asu.edu ****************************************************** I am Topher Spinnato, owner of Topherspin Meteorites LLC.
