Neurological manifestations of Sjögren disease (SD) are a major unmet need from the perspective of both people living with the symptoms and rheumatologists. This webinar focuses on one side of this problem, the peripheral neurological manifestations that are the most frequent feature of neurological involvement in SD. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) can be affected in up to 20% of patients with SD and be the presenting symptom of the disease in up to one quarter of patients. The clinical presentation of PNS involvement includes a variety of neuropathic conditions, such as sensory and sensorimotor axonal polyneuropathy and multiple mononeuropathy. Small fiber neuropathy is a borderline condition between PNS and autonomic NS manifestations since small fibers deliver information for both. Therefore, the clinical picture is complex and often mistaken for other conditions (e.g., fibromyalgia, compression neuropathy). Despite increasing knowledge on this topic, the diagnostic process of neurological manifestations remains a clinical challenge. Furthermore, therapeutic approaches of peripheral neurological manifestations may rely on the use of immunosuppressive and biologic agents, but this is mainly based on their efficacy in other autoimmune diseases since data in SD are scarce. In addition, drugs used in the neurology setting (e.g. gabapentinoid) may also be considered but the overall benefit is small. The speaker of this webinar is: Dr. Alessia Alunno (MD, University of L’Aquila, Italy) The moderators of this webinar are: 1. Mrs. Coralie Bouillot(ePAG Representative, Sjogren Europe) 2. Prof. Gaetane Nocturne (MD, APHP Hopital Bicetre, France) Alessia Alunno, MD, undertook her medical degree, specialty training in Rheumatology and PhD in medical biotechnologies at the University of Perugia, Italy. During her training, she also completed a research fellowship at the Centre for Experimental Medicine and Rheumatology, Queen Mary University of London, United Kingdom. Over the last 15 years Dr Alunno gained extensive experience on rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) with a research and clinical focus on Sjögren disease and she co-authored over 200 articles in international peer-reviewed journals. Dr Alunno has co-designed several projects with national and international patient associations to identify and address unmet needs of patients with RMDs. Furthermore, she has been invited speaker in numerous national and international Congresses. In 2017 Dr Alunno founded the Young Rheumatologist Committee within the Italian Society of Rheumatology and in 2018 she served as Chair of the Emerging EULAR Network (EMEUNET), the EULAR Committee for young rheumatologists and researchers in rheumatology. Dr Alunno is now working at the Internal Medicine and Nephrology Division of the University of L’Aquila where she established the cardiovascular outpatient clinic for patients with RMDs. Her Centre is a regional reference Center for various rare diseases including polymyositis and antiphospholipid syndrome.
