Over the passed several months Safer Arizona had been negotiating with The Marijuana Policy Project on the final language of the MPP 2016 campaign to regulate marijuana like alcohol. Things the cannabis consumer culture were asking for were grow rights, fair DUI laws, parental rights, industrial hemp, defelonization, post conviction relief, and a reasonable way to get into the industry among other things. We managed to get some of our requests in but did not get others like defeonization, did not get post conviction relief, and the thresh holds are not realistic which will result in felony arrests and prison time for getting caught with barley over your legal limit. For example in the MPPs initiative you get 6 plants to grow at home but 7 plants can be felonies and jail time. The Citizens is 12 plants per person, and 12 to 99 plants is a class 3 misdemeanor. The general consensus of the educated cannabis advocate is that the MPP's initiative is a lot better than what we have now but is still substandard in regards to what true legalization is and is unacceptable. Safer Arizona felt the same way but did not see the up swelling needed to excite a counter initiative to get something better on the ballot yet and some of us were under the impression that you can only vote for 1 initiative if both get on the ballot. That is not the case. Apparently you can vote for both initiatives and they can both pass and where ever the laws conflict the one that got the most votes takes precedence in the situation. This information was discovered about the same time social media started boiling with activists prepping a counter citizens initiative that will give us real legalization. Many people do not believe the citizens can get an initiative on the ballot because Safer Arizona only got about 7% of the 260,000 signatures needed to get on the 2014 ballot. However; Safer Arizona started with 4 people, the founder Dave being in active duty Army stationed in South Korea for a year of the campaign. With that we were able to send out enough petitions to anyone who asked for free out of our pockets to get about 180,000 signatures. We only got 7% back because we had very poor tracking practices in place. We can fix that. This year we only need 154,000 signatures and we aren't starting with just 4 people. We have hundreds of volunteers signed up waiting to collect signatures all over the state, thousands of followers, several businesses, and organizations, SaferArizona.com has the main google juice for the search term "Arizona Marijuana Legalization" We have our own facility with weekly meetings, other facilities donated to the cause and have funding. We are in a tremendously different situation than in 2013. The citizens will get their initiative on the ballot. This is why Safer Arizona has decided to report on both initiatives but only put labor into the citizens initiative. Mikel Weisser was the only one of our group who adamantly opposed supporting a citizens initiative so he was removed from our team and is no longer a part of Safer Arizona. June 7th Safer Arizona and North American Analytical hosted a community meeting in regards to how to move forward with the citizens initiative. Jason Medar is the head of the push. He is consulting with attourney Tom Dean in the coming day or so to add in a post conviction relief section. The Initiative should be filed with the Secretary Of State by Wednesday. Then we will be printing petitions, teaching classes, holding events, protests, and collecting signatures.
