In this virtual tour we walked in the center of the city of Viterbo. Viterbo is an Italian municipality of 66122 inhabitants located in northern Lazio, also known as Tuscia viterbese or Alto Lazio. Viterbo has ancient Etruscan origins, it has a vast medieval historic center, surrounded by walls dating back to the 12th century AD. The San Pellegrino district, one of the largest medieval quarters in Europe, is the symbol of the ancient medieval city of Viterbo. In addition, Viterbo is known as the city of the Popes, as it was the papal seat in the late 13th century and for 24 years the Palace of the Popes hosted and saw the election of several pontiffs. Finally, Viterbo is known for the feast of Santa Rosa, the city's patron saint. Every year, on the evening of September 3, 100 men called "Facchini di Santa Rosa" hoist the Macchina di Santa Rosa, a 30-meter (98-foot) tall machine built in honor of Saint Rose of Viterbo that weighs about 5,000 kilograms (11,000 pounds), and carry it through the streets and squares of the city center. The procession of the Macchina di Santa Rosa is a very important event in Viterbo, attracting thousands of spectators, and is included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
