After a debate spanning two days and 24 hours Parliament passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. On Wednesday the legislation was passed by the Lok sabha and in Rajya sabha on Thursday. The bill was passed after intense heated debates in both houses as both treasury and oppositon benches worked hard to derive political mileage. But the challenges the new law is expected to face are huge. The 30 Waqf boards in India control 8.7 lakh properties spread over 9.4 lakh acres. The total value of Waqf properties is estimated at ₹1.2 lakh crore. Waqf properties are reason for thousands of litigations in hundreds of courts all over the country. There are almost 59,000 Waqf properties which the boards claim have been encroached upon across the country. There are allegations of illegal sale and misuse of Waqf properties, which were meant for religious and charitable purposes. Waqf boards have staked claims on nearly 250 protected monuments across the country. These include the qutub minar in delhi. India has been working to regulate and protect Waqf properties, which have religious, social, and economic significance since the British period. The first major law, the Waqf Act of 1954, laid the foundation for managing these properties. Over time, laws have been updated to improve governance and prevent misuse.
