Menlo-Atherton Bears vs Wilcox Chargers 2018 CCS Open D1 Championship Menlo-Atherton defense forced seven turnovers, three of which led to touchdowns to take down previously undefeated Wilcox. GSF Week 3 Game of the Week MVP Justin Anderson led the squad in big plays with two game-changing interceptions and a fourth quarter TD that brought the Bears to within one, 28-27 with 6:07 left in the game. The whole game was intense but when the extra point was blocked, the situation got everyone on their feet inside the Independence HS stadium. Wilcox, who spends most of their offensive attack on the ground uncharacteristically passed in the remaining minutes of the game. GSF Playmaker Alex Adame threw a few solid competitions earlier in the game, on of which was a 41-yard strike to GSF Week 7 Game of the Week MVP Paul Rosa. But two pass attempts by Adame was played perfectly by the M-A defense in the closing minutes of the game after Troy Franklin took a toss from his freshman QB Matt MacLeod for the go-ahead touchdown that put M-A up 33-28. Anderson ended the Chargers' ensuing drive with his second pick of the night. He finished with 3 pass breakups, two interceptions and a TD. But Wilcox defense would hold and return the ball their offense with a little over two minutes left on the clock. Senior LB Isaiah Flores came up with some big stops for the Chargers all game, including a tackle for a loss on Jaeden Barker with 1:55 left. But on first and 10 from their own 28 yard line, Adame's pass attempt to his speedy playmaker Rosa was picked off by another M-A freshman, Jalen Moss and the rest was history. Moss, who already made a transition to play basketball was called up to keep playing football for Coach Adhir's varsity squad became the hero of a wild game that lived up to the hype. Moss kept up with his receiver on one-on-one coverage, turned around just in time to have the ball land right in the breadbasket for the game-sealing interception. Wilcox took a 21 point lead with Rosa and Gabe Herrera running the rock on three to five yard bursts. Rosa scored the first, while Herrera ran the next two. M-A got going shortly after trailing three touchdowns. GSF Playmaker Jaeden Barker took a handoff and raced thru traffic for a 45-yard TD. Four-star national recruit Daniel Heimuli tipped a pass attempt by Adame and caught it himself for a Bears turnover in the Chargers' following offensive drive. That led to a touchdown pass by GSF Week 10 Game of the Week MVP QB Jack Alexander to Troy Franklin in the corner of the end zone. Alexander started the game for M-A and was pressured numerous times by the Wilcox's defense led by Flores and Isaac Passett. That touchdown electrified the Bears crowd even more as M-A pulled to within seven points midway thru the second quarter. Trailing 28-14 at the half, Coach Adhir made a gutsy call to debut his freshman QB to give the offense a different look, something that Wilcox was not ready for and it worked. MacLeod's first two pass completions where strikes into moving targets. He connected with Anderson twice on his first offensive drive, the second one was in the end zone but a holding penalty was called which nullified his first TD pass. MacLeod completed 10 of 18 pass attempts for 116 yards. As M-A moves forward and on to the CIF NorCal Regional Championship, it will be interesting which QB will end up with the ball for the Bears. This was a team that struggled earlier in the season at the quarterback position. At one point, Coach Adhir had to use his senior captain linebacker Feleti Malupo to go under center. Barker, a running back also got time running the Bears' wildcat offense. Anderson also started at QB earlier in the year and earned himself the iconic GSF MVP shirt after leading M-A to a win against Mitty in week three. It's a great problem to have, similar to what the number one college team in the nation is dealing with over at Alabama. As both teams shook hands after the conclusion of the game, tears of joy and pain ran thru some of the players faces from both sides. It was a game for the ages, something each and every player and coaches will never forget for the rest of their lives. Final score Bears 33, Chargers 28.
