Excerpt from the 20th Annual WesFest Concert, in Boston, MA. I was the featured guest artist and played with distinguished Berklee faculty members Victor Wooten and Bass Dept. Chair Steve Bailey, along with Dana Hawkins on drums, for a three bass jam of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" - and I threw in some Black Sabbath "N.I.B." as an intro, probably marking the very first time these two songs have ever segued into each other. ;-) This year's Wes Wehmiller scholarship was awarded to Stella Chapple, a great and deserving young bassist! She played a set and killed up there with her own band. It was my honor, after 10+years of helping to produce this event, to be able to contribute in a different way. And jamming with Victor and Steve, gah! Dana is a great drummer as well. Thanks to all those guys for making me feel at home, 30+ years later. ******** MORE INFO: The Wes Wehmiller Memorial Endowed Scholarship honoring the life and legacy of Wes Wehmiller ’92, accomplished bassist, athlete, and photographer, was established in 2005 by the Wehmiller family and Wes’s extended family of friends from all over the world. Each year, the Berklee Bass Department awards this prestigious scholarship to a continuing student of the electric bass whose musicianship and spirit demonstrate their potential to carry on the same talent and generosity of spirit that Wes had. The central fundraising event for the Wehmiller Scholarship has been an annual tribute concert called WesFest. Held in Los Angeles from 2006-2018, the gathering now happens in Boston on the Berklee campus and celebrates Wes’s musical legacy and serves as an opportunity for the scholarship recipient to perform alongside and be mentored by concert headliners, who have included world-renowned bassists Pino Palladino, John Patitucci, Jimmy Haslip, Victor Wooten, Abraham Laboriel, Andrew Gouche, and Doug Wimbish, all of whom were important influences on Wes.
