I'm an orthopedic surgeon. Well, I'm a native of Spain, Madrid. So I did my medical school in Madrid. And then I did my Fellowship after finishing my residency in New York, in Columbia Presbyterian. And then I was just drifting south down to Miami. I found this city very attractive coming down in December, beautiful weather, beautiful palm trees, and a wonderful warm people. [Describe your typical patient] Dr. Francisco Borja: You deal with people who can't walk or who are in pain. Common patient that might come to me is said somebody who is elderly, who cannot walk, has difficulty moving. That's an example of a patient who could be helped by having a hip or knee replacement surgery, then being able to resume ambulation and being able to resume activities that they were not able to reach. Those patients are very thankful, very grateful to you. [Any inspiring recovery stories?] Dr. Francisco Borja: It was a woman, she was from Romania, and she hasn't walked for about six years. They used to drag her with a wheelchair into her church. So one time the Pastor called me and asked me to see if I could take care of her. And I happened to have somebody very crippled with rheumatoid arthritis. I was able to do surgery, several surgeries until finally she was able to get up and walk. But two or three months later, they brought me a young kid, was in his twenties, and he was also in a wheelchair. But this patient had cerebral palsy. So that's when I made a phone call to the father who was taking care of him and say, "Well, I think this is more for you than for me. I think we need God more than an orthopedic surgeon." So last I remember, they were so impressed in the church that this poor woman hasn't been able to walk, that the community thought I could make walk everybody. [What sets the center of excellence apart?] Dr. Francisco Borja: We have a very good group of people dedicated to orthopedic, and I think that has a great future. Little by little you realize that you can be more effective if you have a good team of people working for you.
