Turbinates are finger like projection on the side of the nostril. Each side you have about three turbinates from below to above. Inferior, middle and superior , three different turbinates are there of which the inferior turbinate is the biggest and the prominent one. That is responsible for lot of symptoms like nose block, congestion, running discharge. So a person having a flu like symptom we have a lot of congestion happening in the turbinates. These are supposed to respond to an insult like infection or allergy in such a way that they get congested, they get swollen, and also tend to secrete a lot of mucus during this period. So if a person has flu like symptom only for the last short period of time the you don’t really develop an inferior turbinate hypertrophy in the true sense. It will be temporary swelling condition which subsides and this turbinate becomes normally sized after the insult is goen and the treatment is given. Whereas a person having allergies will still have those symptoms like sneezing, running nose, congestion, blocked nose on a long term or at least it will be happening recurrently for a long term then the turbinates tend to become swollen permanently. That is what is called a true hypertrophy of the turbinates. These are more troublesome because teh nose is constantly blocked and there is lot of secretion happening s well. So they really make life miserable. Sometimes they develop really slowly that you don’t even recognise that there is a turbinate hypertrophy. But you have a terrible nose block and you probably tend to snore in the night. That means you open the nose and breath through the mouth because nose breathing space is narrowed down significantly. So a short term flu no chance of permanent hypertrophy, whereas things like dust allergy, allergic rhinitis on the long run will definitely lead to inferior turbinate hypertrophy.
