Honoring Black Veterans Honoring Stories. Preserving Legacy. Proudly Observing Black History Month .The New York State Department of Veterans’ Services opened Black History Month with The Weight & The Witness: Honoring Black Veterans Through Story, Poetry, and Living Memory — a powerful virtual program reflecting on the legacy, resilience, and lived experiences of Black Service Members. Participants from across New York State and beyond joined together for an evening of film, spoken word, artistic expression, and meaningful dialogue. The program created space not to lecture history, but to listen to it — honoring the voices and memories that continue to shape our communities. We extend our sincere appreciation to: Mayor Dorcey Applyrs, City of Albany, for helping open the program Viviana DeCohen, Commissioner, New York State Department of Veterans’ Services Joel Evans, Executive Deputy Commissioner, NYS DVS The program was expertly framed, moderated, and created by Dr. Lessie Branch, Special Assistant for Community Engagement, whose words set the tone: "Today we don’t lecture history. Today we listen to it." Featured as part of the event was Echoes of Service, a compelling micro-documentary created by Dr. Branch that elevates the voices, experiences, and enduring legacy of Black Service Members. Through storytelling and reflection, the film reminds us that history is something we carry forward together. Programs like The Weight & The Witness reaffirm that honoring service also means honoring stories — ensuring voices, experiences, and memories are preserved for future generations. Thank you to all who participated and helped make this program a meaningful part of Black History Month.
