360° Breathing is all about accessing space for more lung expansion in a 360° circumference around your entire torso. Here we stretch the sides of your ribcage and learn how to breathe laterally. This can, also, be great for working your core and doing pilates while still getting in a big breath. After all, air is your most essential nutrient. Attempt to always inhale through your nose and expand your torso three-dimensionally. This is 360° breathing. You want to push out all sides of your torso and even expand the bottom ribs and the bottom of your lungs without tensing your shoulders or face. Your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles will expand to accommodate your effort to take in a greater amount of air than you usually do. Give your torso some breathing room and increase your lung capacity. Breathing is a subconscious activity that can be overridden with our conscious minds. Then, the conscious can start to influence the unconscious. That is the beauty of this series. As you allow your lower ribs to expand with every breath, the inverse or abdominal contraction and a deeper emptying of your lungs will occur and eliminate stale air. Then another nourishing full expansion follows and the cycle continues in a beautiful rhythm. On day 1 of the 360° Breathing Challenge you learned how to use diaphragmatic breathing. This is a great start for your core muscles and a precursor for the Pilates breathing where you will be breathing laterally. Here your abdominals will be engaged during the inhale as your ribs open to outward expansion. This is great for Pilates and some other athletic movements where you want your abs engaged to protect your lower back. Have fun with it and don't stress if it's challenging.
