This project, delivered by Radhika Kothari (2013-14) and Swapnil Chaudhari (2012-13) from GroundUp Conservation highlighted a core mismatch in biodiversity conservation: grassroots organisations are central to on- ground impact, yet the systems meant to support them are poorly aligned with their realities. Through engagement with over 80 grassroots groups across five South Asian countries, the project found that challenges faced by these organisations are less about lack of commitment or knowledge, and more about rigid funding structures, power imbalances, and unrealistic expectations. Hear about the development of a Grassroots Organisation Lifecycle (GOL) Framework as a reflective tool to understand how grassroots organisations grow across different capacities at different paces.
