I don’t care what anyone tells you, Kula Cloths STINK like urine! Makers claim the sun dries out the ammonia and burns away any odor, but every woman I asked said theirs (like mine) never dried and always smelled. And let me tell you, the smell of pee grows worse and worse the longer you’re on the trail—and it permeates everything. Cleaning it with Sea To Summit camp soap every evening, washing it (even soaking it in bleach) in towns didn’t work. It was terrible. When people talk about stinky hikers, I had no idea the Kuka Cloth would be the absolute worst culprit of them all. The stench of urine was so bad, I had to start washing the nearby outside mesh pocket of my backpack along with my rain gear to prevent the smell from transferring. Yuck! I’d already tried a quartered bandana, but wasn’t a fan because the fabric was neither soft or absorbent (nobody wants wet fingertips). As it turns out, the answer to finding a super absorbent, yet ultra lightweight and quick-drying fabric was already on my gear list TWICE! I had one REI multi-towel in my pack as a face & body wipe and a second one as part of my kitchen gear in my bear bag. They are AMAZING! It’s time to add a quartered third one to my bathroom kit!
