Harold "Hal" Wolf III is the President and Chief Executive Officer of HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society), a global nonprofit organization dedicated to improving healthcare through information and technology. He has held this role since September 2017, overseeing significant growth, with membership rising from under 80,000 to over 120,000. Under his leadership, HIMSS has expanded its influence as a thought leader in digital health transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and workforce development. Wolf brings extensive experience in healthcare and technology. Before HIMSS, he was the Director and Practice Leader of Information and Digital Health Strategy at The Chartis Group, advising healthcare organizations on integrated information and precision medicine strategies. He also served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Kaiser Permanente’s Permanente Federation, managing care delivery strategies and data governance for over 16,000 physicians. Earlier, he was Chief Information Officer at Quest Communications/USWest, focusing on e-business and corporate systems. At HIMSS, Wolf has emphasized using technology to address global healthcare challenges, such as workforce shortages (noting a current 9-million clinician gap, projected to reach 13-18 million in the next 5-8 years) and health equity. He champions AI as a tool for operational efficiency and clinical support, while stressing its role as a suggestion tool, not a decision-maker. The HIMSS25 Global Health Conference & Exhibition (March 3-6, 2025, in Las Vegas), which he recently highlighted, drew over 30,000 attendees and focused on these themes. His leadership earned him a spot among the Top 50 Healthcare Technology CEOs of 2024 by The Healthcare Technology Report.
