And for decades now, Iran and the Arab Gulf States (mainly Saudi-Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates) have struggled to obtain dominance in the region. The dispute not only revolves around the material and strategic value of the waters, but also its name itself: Is it the Persian Gulf, or the Arabian Gulf? This question has become a heated discussion in the region, with many Arab states favouring the term ‘Arabian Gulf’ while Iran, and most of the rest of the world, consider the term ‘Persian Gulf’ as the correct one.
