In the spring of 1971, Martin Cole did something that made every farmer in Lancaster County, Nebraska think he'd lost his mind. He planted beans between his corn rows. Not in a separate field—in the same field, the same rows, corn and beans growing together. The John Deere dealer laughed so hard he had to wipe his eyes. "Martin, those plants will choke each other. You'll lose both crops. That's not farming, that's gardening gone wrong." The neighbors gave him a nickname: "Double Trouble Martin." They waited for his field to fail. It didn't fail. It thrived. The beans did something nobody expected—they fed nitrogen directly into the soil, nitrogen that the corn desperately needed. Martin's corn grew taller and greener than anyone else's. And when harvest came, he had two crops to sell instead of one. For ten years, they kept laughing. Then 1980 came. Corn prices collapsed. Farmers who had bet everything on one crop watched their income disappear. But Martin Cole had two harvests. Two incomes. Two chances to survive. He was the only one still laughing. This story draws from real agricultural history of the 1970s-80s. Characters and dialogue are dramatized for storytelling. Have you ever tried something different that everyone said would fail?
