The Danakil Desert, located in northeastern Ethiopia, is one of the most extreme environments on Earth. It lies within the Great Rift Valley, where three tectonic plates meet: the African, Arabian, and Somali. Geological processes occurring in this region create a unique landscape – depressions, active volcanoes, sulfur fields, and salt flats. The lowest part of the desert – the Danakil Depression – lies approximately 120 meters below sea level, with air temperatures often exceeding 50°C. Within it lies the Dallol crater, known for its colorful geothermal springs and intense volcanic activity, and the Erta Ale volcano, whose crater contains one of the world's few permanent lava lakes. This region is also of great importance for the study of human origins. It was here that the remains of Australopithecus afarensis, known as "Lucy," were discovered – one of the oldest pieces of evidence for human evolution. In the Danakil Basin region, including the Omo Valley, numerous hominid fossils have been found, including Australopithecus, Homo habilis, and Homo erectus. The oldest human bones, dating back nearly 3 million years, have also been discovered here. Primitive Oldowan tools have been found. For this reason, the Danakil region is sometimes referred to as the cradle of humanity. Despite the extreme conditions, the Afar people live in the desert, mining and trading salt for centuries. Their culture and way of life exemplify human adaptation to some of the harshest climatic conditions on the planet.
