When joining pieces of wood, the orientation of the wood grain has a great deal to do with the strength of the joint. This is true of all joints, including screw joints. A screw driven into face grain, perpendicular to the cellulose fibers that make up the grain, will hold better and last longer than one driven into end grain, parallel to those fibers. When you drive a screw into end grain, the wood immediately surrounding the screw – the anchor – breaks easily and lets the screw come loose. When the driven into face grain, the anchor is stronger and more durable. But what should you do if you absolutely, positively have to drive a scew into the end grain? Nick has some suggestion as to how to add some strength to these joints. To see all of our videos and SUBSCRIBE for more, see: / @workshopcompanion .
