▼About the cherry blossoms at the National Theatre The first cherry trees at the National Theatre were planted in the back garden where the Traditional Performing Arts Information Centre now stands. In the backyard, theater employees planted a Suruga cherry tree in 1972 and a Sekiyama cherry tree in 1984 to commemorate their retirement. In 1994, three double-flowered weeping cherry trees were planted in the front yard, and in 2000, one Suruga Komachi cherry tree, a new variety derived from the Suruga cherry tree in the backyard, and two other varieties of cherry blossoms were planted. The following year, in 2001, the two trees from the backyard were transplanted in consideration of the construction of the Traditional Performing Arts Information Center. Since then, various kinds of cherry trees have been planted little by little, and in March 2012, Ichikawa Danjuro XII, who starred in the kabuki production "Ichinotani no Fugunki" to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the opening of the venue, planted the "Kumagaya Cherry Tree", which is associated with the play. Now, a total of 19 cherry trees of eight different varieties bloom in the spring. Since the blooming times differ slightly depending on the type, you can enjoy the cherry blossoms for a long period of time. ▼When does the cherry blossom season begin at the National Theatre? | National Theatre 50th Anniversary Website | National Theatre https://www.ntj.jac.go.jp/50th/column... ▼National Theatre official website https://www.ntj.jac.go.jp/kokuritsu.html About cherry blossoms Jindai Akebono In 1912, Japan sent Somei-Yoshino cherry trees to Washington DC, USA (see National Cherry Blossom Festival). Later, a Somei-Yoshino cherry tree was crossbred with another species of cherry tree in the US, and the seedlings of the Somei-Yoshino cherry tree gave birth to a species called "Akebono" in the US. In 1965, this "Akebono" was re-imported to the Tokyo Metropolitan Jindai Botanical Gardens in Japan, but since there was already another species of cherry tree called "Akebono" in Japan, it was called "America". When this "America" (US name: Akebono) was grafted and grown at the Jindai Botanical Gardens, one tree bloomed with flowers that were different in characteristics from "America" (Akebono), and Naomichi Nishida revealed that it was a different species from "America" (Akebono). This tree was used as the original tree, and in 1991, the Jindai Akebono was registered as a new species under the Seed and Seedlings Act. The name was given by Yae Hayashi, and the variety's name is derived from the place where the original tree was planted and its former name. According to the Japan Flower Association, the parent of Jindai Akebono, a cherry variety that crossed with Somei Yoshino in the United States, is not a wild American species from a morphological point of view, but a Japanese cherry tree that was introduced to the United States from Japan, and Jindai Akebono is thought to be a hybrid of two Japanese cherry trees. Komatsu Otome Komatsu-otome is a cultivated variety of Edohigan cherry tree. Its scientific name is Cerasus spachiana 'Komatsu-otome'. It blooms slightly earlier than Somei-Yoshino, has five petals, is slightly smaller, and is a slightly darker pale pink. It was named after the original tree, which is located near the bronze statue of Prince Komatsunomiya Akihito in Ueno Park. Komatsu-otome is also planted in Ueno Park and in the front garden of the National Theater in Hanzomon. Suruga Cherry Blossoms This cherry tree was created by the Mishima Genetics Institute of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. It produces large white flowers that gradually turn red and become fragrant.
