My methods may be unconventional, and I always welcome advice and tips from the community! Welcome to Episode 3 of Adventures in Archiving! 🎉 In this episode, we delve into archiving my modest collection of Apple II disks, a nostalgic journey filled with vintage tech surprises and quirky finds. First, we unbox a small collection of Apple II disks I purchased from the Dutch version of eBay. Alongside the disks, we uncover vintage Apple accessories like an Apple cable, a Scribe printer color ribbon, and some mystery printer ribbons. Next, we inspect the disks, discovering an intriguing mix of labeled and unlabeled disks featuring games like Apple Panic and Swashbuckler. Then, we revive my trusty Apple IIe, complete with a vintage monitor and a surprisingly functional Distar floppy drive. I share my RetroMels DVOET (Dutch version of eBay theory) and explore the Apple IIe’s capabilities. We move on to cleaning and preparing the disks with the Greaseweazle and FluxEngine software. I walk you through the archiving process step-by-step, from reading magnetic data to creating disk images, and troubleshoot some common issues. As we test out classic Apple II games and programs, we have fun with a monochrome monitor and the occasional focus issues of my ZV1 camera. I also demonstrate using CiderPress and AppleWin to preserve and play disk images, and give you a sneak peek at disk contents and the AMS Apple User Group disks. Join me on this archival adventure to discover more about the process, my retro tech setups, and hands-on tips for fellow enthusiasts.
