In 2005, founders Florian Pellissier (rhodes, keyboards) and Franck Chatona (saxophone) brought onboard Benoit Giffard (trombone), Christophe Touzalin (trumpet), David Georgelet (drums), Farid Baha (guitar), Florian Pellissier (rhodes and keyboards), Franck Chatona (saxophone), Jean-Claude Kebaïli (electric bass), and Paul Bouclier (trumpet, percussion) to merge sticky 70’s jazz-funk with Brazilian influences. In July 2024, they light up the daytime crowds of the Cosmo Jazz Festival in Chamonix to promote their latest album Victoire de la musique. They open their set with a playful rendition of Richard Strauss’ “Sprach Zarathustra”, also known as the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey to the energized crowd. While their set is a mix of covers and originals, they use this opening song as an accessible onramp into their actual discography of experimental melodies on top of a foundation of disco grooves. They dial back the energy of their upbeat set with “O Céu é Preto” at around 45 minutes in, a mid-tempo R&B confection made in collaboration with artist GYSTERE. The song opens with soaring synths and blossoms into Herbie Hancock style horn arrangements with a thumping pulse. To end Cotonete’s time at Cosmo, the wind section walks off the stage to cheerfully serenade the crowd on the grass.
