Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a pre-budget speech Wednesday night, two weeks ahead of its release, in which he said it was "time to swing for the fences." "Above all, we will build Canadian. The new security threats the world is bringing to our shores means we're making the biggest investments in our military in generations," Carney said. "Our goal for Canada is to double our non-U.S. exports over the course of the next decade, generating more than $300 billion more in trade." The prime minister continued, saying, "I'm going to make this promise to Canadians. I will always be sorry for the challenges that we face and the choices that we must make. And to be clear, we won't transform our economy easily or in a few months, it will take some sacrifices and it will take some time." The speech comes as a new report from Desjardins estimates the federal budget deficit could be the highest in 30 years, outside of the Great Recession and COVID-19 pandemic years.
